Danfoss Drives Reduce Fuel Emissions Aboard a Korean Research Vessel

The South Korean National Institute of Fishery Science is benefitting from 20-30% less emissions as well as savings on fuel on its latest research vessel. Danfoss Drives designed an innovative drive solution in conjunction with STX Engine, the South Korean ship engine experts which optimised the performance of the generator and engine on board the vessel. The Danfoss Drives solution contributed to helping the shipbuilder comply with the IMO environmental regulations which came into force in 2020.

The project faced initial challenges in the design phase, particularly the integration of a European synchronous generator, as determined in the project specification. The challenge was to double the capacity of the standard shaft generator, to make sure that it met the current short circuit requirements. Danfoss was able to deliver a less complex, more high-performance shaft generator design for the project and installing a shaft generator onboard helped with meeting emission targets. This was a result of improved operational efficiency and enabling designers to downsize the engine.

The innovative drive solution provided by Danfoss Drives, in conjunction with STX Engine, optimised the performance of the generator and engine on board the research vessel. This not only ensured compliance with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) environmental regulations but also exceeded expectations by significantly reducing fuel emissions.

The benefits of this implementation extended beyond emission reduction. The converted specifications from synchronous to asynchronous mode resulted in lower noise, reduced vibration, and lower energy consumption compared to vessels without this innovative technology. The shaft generator powered navigation and ship systems, allowing the vessel to operate in electric propulsion mode during low-speed or part-load operations, contributing to a cleaner and more stable maritime environment.

The Shaft Generator Components

The 500 kW shaft generator system is built up of these products:

  • VACONĀ® NXP Grid Converter with LC sine filter
  • VACONĀ® NXP generator converter with dU/dt filter
  • Liquid-cooling station HXM-M-120-N-S
  • Engineering cabinet
  • Transformer
  • Motor/generator Application: 500 kW shaft generator system

In embracing Danfoss’ drives, the Korean research vessel stands as a testament to the transformative power of sustainable innovation. This initiative aligns seamlessly with Danfoss’ commitment to delivering solutions that exceed environmental standards, paving the way for a cleaner and more efficient maritime future.

Digicon and Danfoss act swiftly to make a mini-field hospital operational during the COVID-19

In a swift response to the urgent call from the healthcare sector during the COVID-19 pandemic, Danfoss and Digicon Solutions, an approved Danfoss drives Distributor, joined forces to make a mini field hospital operational in the UK. The collaboration, marked by a dedicated supply chain and technical expertise, exemplified resilience and agility in the face of unprecedented challenges.

The request came in for HVAC drives to be provided for temporary COVID-19 National Health Service (NHS) hospitals, requiring full functionality by April 2020. Originally faced with a six-day delivery time, the Danfoss team in the UK, upon learning of the critical nature of the project, managed to secure next-day delivery. The drives, specifically type FC102 in IP66 form, were crucial for a prototype system aimed at providing Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) for a new type of mini ā€˜field hospitalā€™ in rural areas of the UK.

This enclosure type, ideal for outdoor mounting, facilitated ease of installation and space-saving within the building. Despite the challenges of specific ratings and quantity not being immediately available, Danfoss swiftly organised an express order from the factory, underlining the extra importance of the customer and the impact these solutions would have on the comfort and well-being of those benefiting from them.

This initiative is a testament to Digicon’s commitment to going above and beyond for their customers, a practice evident in their vast experience in providing Variable Speed Drive solutions in the healthcare segment. Previous projects, such as those at Birmingham Childrenā€™s Hospital, South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, Stafford Hospital, and Kettering General Hospital, reflect Digicon’s ability to ensure the operational continuity of critical plants, especially in hospitals.

The crucial role of inverter drives in an efficient hospital cannot be overstated. Hospital facilities demand stable conditions 24/7 to meet patient care goals with optimum operational efficiency. Danfoss, with its rich history dating back to 1968, has been a pioneer in electronic variable frequency motor controls, providing dedicated and reliable products for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning in buildings.

The resilience, collaboration, and commitment demonstrated by Danfoss and Digicon echo their dedication to providing innovative solutions, even in the most challenging circumstances.

David Lloyd Leisure Benefitted from Cost Savings and Reduced CO2 Emission

Facing the challenge of excessive energy consumption by pumps and fans across their health clubs, David Lloyd Leisure sought solutions aligned with the UK’s mission to monitor and reduce CO2 emissions. Digicon Solutions conducted extensive site surveys and free trials, revealing that the pump and fan installations were oversized, providing unnecessary reserve capacity for day-to-day operations. Most applications were equipped with single-speed starters, leading to constant full-speed operation regardless of actual requirements, resulting in substantial energy waste and increased consumption.

Digicon’s experts proposed a solution involving the installation of Danfoss FC102 Variable Speed Drives integrated with timers, CO2 sensors, day/night real-time clocks, and humidity sensors. This innovative approach allowed the motors’ operating speeds to align with demand, significantly reducing energy usage. The potential for savings was substantial, given that power consumption is proportional to the cube of the speed.

To date, Digicon has installed 520 Variable Speed Drives across 90 David Lloyd Leisure Clubs in the UK and Europe. The result has been remarkable, with the group realising savings exceeding Ā£400,000 per year. The annual reduction in CO2 emissions surpasses 2,400 tonnes, marking a significant achievement in David Lloyd Leisure’s commitment to a 20% CSR reduction from the baseline between 2010 and 2014.

This success story exemplifies Digicon Solutions’ expertise in optimising energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact through innovative solutions. The collaboration with David Lloyd Leisure not only yielded substantial financial savings but also made a meaningful contribution to the organisation’s sustainability goals, aligning with the broader global effort to create a greener planet.
